Sumter Historic Trust

Lecture 2

Sumter Historic Trust 2018 Lecture Series: "Seizing Freedom in Sumter County Georgia" was held on March 22, 2018 at the Lee Council House.

This was the first in a series of lectures sponsored by Sumter Historic Trust and the guest speaker was Evan Kutzler, PhD – Author and GSW Assistant Profesor.

Southwest Georgia underwent a rapid transformation in the Civil War Era. While the military story is represented on the modern landscape in historic sites and markers, African Americans—who made up a majority of the Southwest Georgia population—are under represented. This presentation discusses those local experiences of slavery and freedom.
